Not every brand can win the love of the Russian consumer, even if things are going well in other countries. We are talking about fast food chains popular all over the world that have completed their business in our country.
5. Shake Shack
The mass closure of this American burger brand was quietly announced at the end of last year. Saying goodbye to Russia went much calmer than the opening of the last restaurant near the Belorussky railway station in the same 2019 – then the owners threw a noisy and pretentious party. Now this institution and three others on the Old Arbat, in the Aviapark and Metropolis shopping centers have already been closed. At the same time, Shake Shack is doing well in other countries and in his native America. sized/f550x700/ba/xy/baxy5mst80oc4k08o844s4gkk.jpg” media=”(max-width: 549px)”>
This burger brand in the US competes with McDonald's, Subway and Burger King. Wendy's came to Russia in 2011, when in Moscow they opened 8 fast food restaurants at once on Stary Arbat and in large shopping centers under a franchise. They lasted three years, then the owners of the franchise changed, and legal problems began. The brand was doing well, but because of the scandal, it had to leave the Russian market. ru/sized/f550x700/c7/m9/c7m92ll95t4o0kk0kc0k0wook.jpg” media=”(max-width: 549px)”>
3. Carl's Junior
California burger brand Carl's Junior has been around for over 70 years. He came to Russia in 2006, and in 2015 all 30 restaurants closed: the license was revoked from the previous owner.
Currently, Carl's Junior establishments are reopened in several Russian cities, they operate under the original franchises of the American brand Carl's Restaurant LLC.
2. Wetzel’s Pretzels
This chain of bakeries belongs to the Nestle company, they appeared in Moscow in 2013 and began to conquer the local market rather aggressively, offering their famous pretzels to the residents of the capital. They held up until the crisis of 2015, but then things got really bad, and all the establishments closed.

Back in 2014, the American pizza chain business was booming, with nearly 250 locations across the country employing 10,000 employees. But in 2017, due to debts and sanctions, the network went bankrupt, and due to non-payment of wages, a criminal case was even opened against the franchise owner. In 2018, the new owner tried to regain former momentum, but opened only one restaurant in a remote area of Moscow, and even that did not work for long. Now many former Sbarro establishments continue to serve their guests with the same familiar pizza and salads, but under the name Ciao Pizza.
It is not known exactly why not everyone manages to survive in Russian realities. It is unlikely that the competition with local brands is too strong. Rather, for foreign networks in our country, the conditions for doing business are not very favorable. But in the absence of Western competitors, our own fast food is actively developing: Teremok, Kroshka Potato, Mu-Mu.
